My New Friends Are Awesome

You know how I’m always talking about how I’ve made new friends? I know you’re probably thinking “Prove it, Rachel. Prove it!”

Wait, that’s not what you’re thinking? Oh. Well, I’ve got proof anyway.

Last night was my Chicago book reading and party. Despite the snowy weather, my new amazing friends made their way to a local independent bookstore and packed the house.

And then….

At the party…

They revealed…

It’s a cupcake recreation of my book cover! And the dot colors are perfectly coordinated with the actual cover. And the font is the same! And the cupcakes were delicious!

This amazing edible cover was brought to me by my cooking club. Remember when I introduced them? I wrote about it here, the next day. That was on July 11, 2010. This year we spent New Year’s Eve together. And last night they gave me a homemade cookbook: “Recipes for Friendship.” It had all the meals we’ve made in our year and a half of meetings.

It was the nicest thing EVER. But I didn’t cry… too much eye makeup on to let that happen.

So, there you have it. Proof. Searching works!

What’s the most thoughtful gift a friend has ever given you?

Exciting news! MWF Seeking BFF is reviewed in People magazine this week. They say that “this charming, funny chronicle of an ‘experiment in extreme friending’ explores the bonds between women–and the idea that the world is people with potential BFFs.” Me? In People? This is the dream. I’m freaking out! Check it out for yourself (the cover with “Murder at the Palace” on the front. Who could resist?)

Congratulations on being in People! You deserve it though, you’re book is one of a kind and makes sense that it’s getting a lot of hype.

I think one of the coolest things that a friend has ever done for me was when I was in my twenties…. in the days before the Internet. One of my college friends — he was from Kenya… returned home after spending a year studying in the USA. We remained pen pals for a few years after that and that was when he wrote a long distance dedication request to the radio show, “American Top 40”. The show’s host read his letter over the air and then played the song, Richard Marx’s “Right Here Waiting For You” in my honor. Totally cool! I was completely floored when I heard it on the radio!

Casey Casum read a song dedication to you on American Top 40? That is a BIG deal! I remember hearing these (this particular song seemed to come up quite a bit!) and being jealous, wondering if someone would ever dedicate a song to me someday 🙂

  4. I’m so sorry I missed your reading (and those cupcakes!) last night! I had to help a BFF get home from the airport in the snow, so at least I missed it in the name of friendship! My office is near Highland Park, so I’m planning to come to your reading next week.

  5. This is a fabulous cupcake cover! So pretty and yummy and creative!

Wow. This gives me hope that there are still thoughtful and cool BFFs out there to find! Congratulations on People!

When my family moved from Washington state to San Diego, my friend Jane cleaned the house we were moving into. She even moved out stuff that had been left in the house and took it to the dump. When we arrived, our home was in move-in condition! Jane’s one of the most generous friends I’ve ever had.

Congratulations on the book, People, and the cool cake! I’m almost finished listening to your book and it has taught me so much about friends and friendship and it’s been a fun read too. I wish I’d known some of this way sooner. Are you doing any book signings in Pasadena or nearby? I would buy a real book for you to sign since it’s hard to sign an audio download! Thanks for your work.

This is so cool!! How did they get those colors? I was almost in tears reading this, because . . . , how touching?? Total proof of friendship. Looking forward to your signing tonight in Venice 🙂

  10. PEOPLE magazine.. how amazing! Congratulations on everything, including the awesome cupcake/party your new friends made for you proving their passion for their new BFF.
However, having attended your NYC reading and seeing your old (tho’ everyone looked like high school girls, including you) friends…I can see why you sought to replicate those relationships. There was so much love and support in that crowded room it was electric. I was proud to have you sign my copy of your book.
You should be crazy with joy at how much positivity is being “wished” your way.
Good luck tonight. It may not be the Golden Globes, but let everyone know who you are wearing…LOL
